what to expect with your excursion

Samaria Gorge in Crete

Our excursions to the Samaria Gorge are accompanied by professionals and are performed in air-conditioned transport.

Samaria gorge is one of the main sights of Crete!

The Samariá Gorge, a National Park of Greece and a World’s Biosphere Reserve, is the walking highlight on the island of Crete! A spectacular ravine stretching from the plateau of Omalos in the middle of the White Mountains all the way down to Agia Roumeli at the south coast.

Several times a week we offer an early transfer (05:45 hrs) from Almyrida with a bus change in Chania. This excursion is organized by our partner “io-tours Chania”.

The excursion will be accompanied by a knowledgeable, friendly and reliable guide. Inside the gorge you can use your own tempo but please stay on the track. Further on we will send you a paper with all necessary information.

The walk is 15,2 km in total (10 miles), starting in Xyloskalo at an altitude of 1250m, ending at the beach at sea level. Average walking time is about 5 – 6 hours. From Agia Roumeli at the south coast you will have to take a ferry to Sougia. There are no connecting roads from/to Agia Roumeli.

We strongly advise you to wear proper, solid footwear! There is plenty of fresh drinking water in Samaria Gorge. Every few kilometers you can fill up your bottle again, so there is no need to carry lots of water with you. In the summer you will often encounter hot conditions during the second half of your walk. Don`t forget a hat, cap or something similar to cover your head.

Don’t forget a swimsuit and a small towel if you would like to take a refreshing dive into the Libyan Sea at the end. If you can carry them, flip-flops or other light shoes can be pleasant to change into after the walk.

Note: The gorge could be closed occasionally because of fire protection or rain, please ask!

Dear customer, for short notice requests on your excursion(within 24 hrs) please contact us by phone.
